KUALA LUMPUR, 20th December – 404 NOT FOUND, comprising students who represented Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN), has made us proud as they won the grand prize for WhaddaHack@SMIDEX 2017, which was held in MITEC, Kuala Lumpur from 15th to 16th November 2017. The team, consisting Chew Jing Yao, Lim Kien Seng and Nik Muhamad Mirza Hilman Bin Baderolsham, were all students from College of Computer Science and Information Technology (CSIT), UNITEN.
The competition was a platform where the teams were required to develop brand new applications to address issues related to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The team of developers were given 22 hours to develop an idea to a prototype stage and they were required to pitch their idea and prototype and win over the jury.
For this competition, 404 NOT FOUND developed a plugin for a point of sales system that could recognize customer faces and record their purchase history as well as behavior. \”This data will then be shared among SMEs to be utilized to predict new customers behavior, preferences and even their background,\” the team explained.
404 NOT FOUND did not only win themselves RM 7000 cash prize but they managed to be in the spotlight as they were approached by VIPs and CEOs that wanted to know more about their project. When asked about their feelings on winning the grand prize, one team member, Chew Jing Yao said, \”We were quite lucky to win it. We feel grateful as this achievement definitely could not be accomplished without our lecturer\’s help and guidance. Also, thanks to my teammates. After losing in a few competitions, we finally managed to separate the tasks and work together in a better way.\”
When asked for some words to address the students, Nik Mirza did not hesitate to answer, \”Don\’t be lazy and be stuck with a third world mentality. We are living in a new world with unlimited possibilities. Take time to learn new thing. l learned new things everyday out of boredom living as \”normal\” student.\”
\”Strive to achieve something more than just graduating. Your life does not end there, you still have a long way to go. I have a goal that I want to achieve. Do you?\” he added.
NADi would like to offer a round of applause to the team for their hard work and achievement for this competition. We wish all the best for your future endeavour.
